I grew up hating the poetry art form of haiku. I had so much to say and the thought of working with such limited amounts of space frustrated me.
But over the years I’ve embraced the five/seven/five and have fallen in love with the 17 syllables it takes to create a masterpiece.
I guess you can say I’ve experienced unexpected beauty during my haiku journeys.
Incidentally, I’ve had the privilege this summer of teaching middle school students the art of creative writing. Today’s session was a lesson in haiku. I’ve realized, while hearing the works of these younger people, how infinitely more creative they are then I will ever be.
It’s amazing to say the least.
How about you? How do you haiku?
